THE WINTER MENU AT BALANS SOHO SOCIETY

While Soho is known for being at the heart of London’s burlesque shows and theatre land, it’s also known for having some great restaurants. Balans Soho Society began as a sandwich shop on Old Compton Street in 1987 in which David Taylor, owner-manager celebrated Balans 30 year anniversary last year.

With the days getting colder and nights growing longer, we all need a cosy spot to hide away in. Balans Soho Society definitely fits the bill perfectly. I was invited along to trying the new winter menu. I went along with @belleofbrunch my ultimate lunch partner.

We had a lovely warm welcome and was seated whilst we looked at several dishes on the menu wondering what to order. They had a full main menu and there was also a set menu where you got a choice of ordering two or three courses for a set price.

Both of us ordered some dishes to share. We started off with some refreshing mocktails and some sharing plates. Sharing plates are the way to go. We ordered lots and happily got stuck in. Beautiful grilled squid, spiced goat flatbread, smoked mozzarella & bolognese arancini and the crab cakes.

The main event was a comforting plate of pork belly stuffed with apricot and sage with gratin potato, leeks & grain mustard gravy.  The beef bourguignon was perfect for a cold wintery day.

Unable to manage one more bite, we skipped pudding and enjoyed a coffee. I was eyeing up the warm doughnuts, definitely saving room for them next time.

If you haven’t tried Balans Soho Society, you need to rectify that sharpish. It’s a great lunch hang out. They now have seven branches scattered across London.
